What is UPVC Double Window Glazing?

by Martin Troughton

With the recent financial crisis, and the ever present need to reduce energy costs and consumption, many people are looking for ways to retrofit their older homes so that they will be more energy efficient. One of the many ways that generally comes up is better insulation and thicker windows and doors, and this is where products such as UPVC double window glazing start coming into play.

When double glazed windows are installed, two panes of glass will be placed with several millimeters between them which hold air. This adds thickness to the windows, which increases the amount of heat they both keep in and out, and the air trapped between the two window panes acts as extra insulation as well.

The end result is not only a steadier temperature in the home, but also a happier environment. Our homes create around 28% of all the carbon dioxide emissions, mainly through their use of electricity, and we all know nothing uses electricity quite like central air conditioning when it’s having to work overtime. You can lighten it’s load considerably with things like UPVC double window glazing, and like compact florescent light bulbs, you will see energy savings with each individual application. If you’re short on money, these types of upgrades are best because you can do them as you actually have the cash, therefore saving the cash for future upgrades. It’s a good cycle to get caught in.

They’ll also dampen sound pollution from the outdoors, which is great if you live near a busy highway. Other advantages include a decrease in internal condensation, meaning your wall paints and wallpaper are likely to last longer since moisture is often what causes them to begin cracking and peeling.

There are three different types of double window glazing; UPVC double window glazing, aluminum, and wood. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but most of the advantages to anything but UPVC double window glazing are aesthetic only. Aluminum and wood may be a good idea if you have a much older home and it will help the new windows to match, but UPVC double window glazing is far more energy efficient. This is because the UPVC itself has much better insulating qualities than either wood or aluminum. Basically, unless there is some visual reason that you would need or want a wood or aluminum border, than UPVC double window glazing is going to be the way to go. Aluminum or wood is also a way to add color, but in most cases, adding color to your windows would not only be unnecessary, but could also look quite silly.

Energy savings, though very important, is not the only reason people look to double window glazing. Another factor is security. When someone burglarizes a home, their main point of attack is going to be the doors and windows. Double paned windows are very hard to break and have their own, robust locking system. If you’ve ever punched or kicked through a window of any kind, then you know it’s nowhere near as easy as they make it look in the movies. Now imagine double the glass with the air itself distributing some of the impact. Without either some sort of tool, or a whole lot of strength, the thief just may find that penetrating the double windows is either not worth it, or impossible.

UPVC double window glazing will keep neither all the air in or all the thieves out, but you’ll keep a lot more air in than you did before, and your home will be a much smaller target than anyone else on your street that has regular old windows.
