RC Cars: How to Get Started

Have you ever driving a remote controlled car when you where a child? Do you remember how exciting it was to drive that car down the street, zipping here and there.

Today you can revisit your childhood fun, easier than you may have imagined. RC car involvement has reached an all time high and people of all ages are bringing out their remote control vehicles. RC car clubs are cropping up all over and enjoying tournaments, car shows and camaraderie. Entire cities are getting involved by sponsoring the tiny little speed demons.

Getting started is not complicated; you simply have to find a club in your area. To do that check in with hobby shops or specialty stores that carry remote control cars. They will have information about clubs, tournaments and shows that are being held locally. Go to the local Radio Shack or similar store and see what they know.

When you are first getting your feet wet, most hobbyists recommend that you start with a used RC car. This gives you a cheap way to learn about driving the car and may give you an extra project to do as well. You may be wondering, what project? RC cars are just like real cars and when you purchase a used one many times you have work to do on them. On the other hand, you may just want to spruce it up, better body, hop up the engine or change the tires!

A used car gives you more freedom to learn, you will not have the worry about crashing the car and messing it up. Get your experience in an old beater before moving on to NASCAR, so to speak. After you have played, tinkered and learned with your old RC car you can now begin looking for a new one. You can choose battery operated or gasoline powered, if you are not sure which check with an experienced RC car owner. They can advise you on the pros and cons of each model.

Soon you will have a real feel for what the RC car world has to offer you. Nationally there are competitions, shows, tournaments and clubs, just to name a few of the things you can become involved in. Once you get started, you may be surprised at all the activities.

If you feel a little overwhelmed about getting started, there are lots of reading materials now available for the rc car hobbyist. You can find not only different sites that sell many different cars but, there are magazines that you can get and even books. Check your local library to see what they have available as well.

Are you ready to jump in with both feet? Get ready for a wonderful experience and awesome ride. Once you get started, you will be shocked at the world of RC cars and all it has to offer in good clean fun. You never know where this journey might take you, maybe the champion car for your city, state or country!
