Holidays in Africa: Go on Safari to Kenya or Tanzania
Over the years Kenya and Tanzania have proven to be the best safari destinations world over with tourist opting to have best of both worlds where safaris itineraries are customized to cover the best parks of both countries.
The Big Five, ie Lions, Buffaloes, Elephants, Rhinos and the Leopard can be found in these two countries. Visitors to any of these two countries will not be disappointed as they host countless wild animals spread across many national parks, game reserves and conservancies. For those that love taking photos, they will have plenty to do because some of the parks are teeming with attractive looking birds like the flamingos. Other natural attractions in Kenya and Tanzania include waterfalls, lakes and mountains.
Starting with Kenya, the most popular park here is the Masai Mara game reserve. This park is very famous because it plays host to the annual wildebeest migration which joined the list of one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.
It is also home to the big 5 not to mention 95 species of mammals, amphibians, reptiles and over 485 species of birds. it also hosts a major concentration of migratory herbivores including about 250,000 zebra and 1.3 million wildebeest, gazelle, Topi, hippo, hyena, giraffe, leopard and mongoose. The best time to visit the reserve is during the months of July and October;
The Amboseli national park home to over 53 species of herbivores and carnivores the most prominent being the troops of over one thousand elephant who range the plains and wallow the swamps. Also found here are the big 5, cheetah, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, gerenuks, impalas, gazelles, hyenas, baboons, bats and about 425 different species of birds. This park can best be visited during January-February and June-September as this are the dry seasons;
Lake Nakuru National park is famous for the millions of flamingos and pelicans found here and serve as an important sanctuary for the Rhino species both Black and White Rhino easily spotted in their favorite hangout which is under acacias by the Lake shore.
Other wild animals that can be seen here are the zebras, bufalloes, waterbucks and the endangered Rothschild Giraffe. Other parks in Kenya include the Mt Kenya national park, Tsavo East & West National park as well as Lake Baringo and Bogoria.
Moving on to Tanzania, the most famous park in this nation would be the Serengeti National Park. This park is well known for the migration that occurs involving over 1 million wildebeests, 300,000 Thompson gazelles and close to 200,000 zebras. During this period, the animals are on the move searching for new pastures. The Serengeti Park also plays part in the Great Wildebeest Migration.
All the big 5 are found here. The best time to visit is between December and June;
The other famous park in Tanzania is the Ngorongoro Crater found within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The crater is home to over 25,000 large animals and nearly half of these are zebras and wildebeests. The other animals are bufallos, elands, warthogs and hartbeests.
We have quite a huge number of predators including the lions and spotted hyenas because of the large population of herbivores. The other notable large animal found here would be the elephant.
