Here’s a Quick way to Stay Warm this Winter

Long, cold nights are a great time for a cozy bed. When you feel the instinct to hibernate this winter, flannel sheets make the perfect nest for your hideaway.

What is flannel, you ask? It’s a soft, woven fabric with a loosely spun texture. The most common flannel sheets are napped cotton. As an insulator, it’s more effective than basic cotton because there’s less exposed surface area and it holds more heat in its tiny air pockets.

Flannel sheets are great in December, but they’re not all equal. Low quality sheets will turn anyone into a wet blanket.

Avoid the winter blues with your flannel sheets:

Look at fabric weight. Most flannel sheets range between 135 grams to 200 grams (4.6 oz. to 7.1 oz.) per cubic yard. More weight means added warmth, softness and quality.

The only drawback to flannel sheets is piling. Low quality flannels release loose fibers that ball up during the wash. Sheets with piling look old and lose their trademark softness. Look for flannel sheet with tightly woven fibers, and care for them by washing your sheets in a separate wash load.

Flannel sheets with yarn-dyed materials maintain their color the longest. Sheets with printed colors fade faster, especially in warm water. Use a cup of vinegar in your flannel sheets first laundry load to set and protect the color.

After you find a great set of flannel sheets, caring for them is tricky. Since flannel does have napped loose fibers, you’ll find a full lint trap after your first few loads of laundry. Expect your flannel sheets to shrink up to 3 inches when drying. Use a low dryer setting to reduce shrinkage.

Once you get the hang of it, your flannel sheets will always be in the laundry because they get softer every time you wash them. That’s a real motivator!

If your bed is cold, invest in flannel sheets and you’ll save money by turning off the heater. It could be a blizzard in your bedroom and you’ll still be toasty inside your flannel sheets.
