This is true in the United States, Europe, India, and even Japan where it is custom to sleep on the floor. So, if duvet cover sets are not found in the average home why is it that we need them.
Protection is key for extending the life of a down comforter. Most down comforters recommend you wash them every 3-5 years. It is recommended that you air them out and fluff them daily. But how do you follow that recommendation if you enjoy your bed and the warmth of your comforter daily. A cover keeps the dust, dirt, and impurities away from your down comforter and keeps possible prickly down feathers or allergens away from you.
Duvet covers come in different materials allowing you to choose how you want to clean it. Cotton, cotton blends, or certain types of satin covers can easily be washed and dried at home. Some bridal satin or velvet covers may come with recommendations of dry-cleaned only.

The higher the TC, the softer the cover will be. If you want a good quality cover, a 300 TC is okay.
A duvet cover just makes sense if you are going to spend the money on a nice year round down comforter. Protect that investment and maintain a fresh feeling by washing the duvet cover, not the comforter, from those daily impurities.
